The Problem

When painting, an artist needs to have access to the same color- which is often mixed by the artist instead of straight from the tube. There are over 10 million colors to choose from, which can result in infinite color combinations. It’s not easy to remix the same color over and over again, even if you are a professional artist, and traditional palettes don’t help either! These palettes are flat and bend to the artist’s will, or they have pre-set grooves and spaces for the paint to go, which don’t allow much room for mixing. This causes artists to waste time, money, and paint! Which is not ideal when working under a time crunch or a commissioned project.

My Solution

My idea Modern Mixing reimagines the idea of a traditional painter’s palette. I have designed an insert for the most commonly used palette among artists; the Masterson Sta-Wet Palette. My insert will have a series of various circular sized measurements. These measurements consist of circular drawings on the pallet that will allow the artist to accurately measure, mix, and record their exact process of mixing a specific color. In addition to the insert this product will also be paired with a paper system in which the user can track and record which colors and amounts of colors were used to make their desired outcome. So when that color is needed again I the future they have the exact breakdown.

Modern Mixing will allow my audience of artists to keep track of their mixed colors, improving the efficiency of creating a painting by saving time, money, and frustration that is created by wasted paint in an attempt to match “just the right color.”

Inspiration For Modern Mixing

My inspiration for this project came to me when working on a piece for AP art early into the year. I wanted to make this pinky red and I just could not find the right color. After lots of trial and error, I finally mixed the color I wanted. But then I ran out of it and I hadn't remembered what colors and how much I had used of each to achieve the color I wanted. During this process I became frustrated because I was wasting not only my paint, but my time trying to frin the correct ratio of colors. I ended up mixing way more paint than what was needed and I just threw it out. I thought there must be a better way to do go about this. Then Modern Mixing was born.
